Lanterns Season 1 Episode 5 Preview finds John Stewart and Hal Jordan entering “Lights Out” with their partnership under greater pressure just as the mystery surrounding Rushville becomes more dangerous. After spending four episodes hunting the Manhunter, John and Hal may finally know where to look, but discovering the truth could come at the worst possible moment.
“The Weenie” ended with Hal realizing that Zoe’s apparent death may have been staged and that she could be the Manhunter hiding in plain sight. But that revelation came only after John admitted what he told the Guardians about Hal and concealed what he suspected about Zoe.
Hal said he forgave him.
Then he jumped out of their moving car.
With only four episodes remaining, “Lights Out” arrives at the point where the investigation, John and Hal’s deteriorating trust, and the Guardians’ decision about the ring can no longer remain separate stories.

Then Hal spotted the flaw.
If Macon was the Manhunter, who attacked Zoe?
The answer led John and Hal toward their most unsettling theory yet: Zoe may have staged her own death because she is the Manhunter.
That possibility turns John’s relationship with Zoe into part of the investigation and makes everything she has told him potentially suspect.
But “Lights Out” begins with another problem.

Their partnership has survived insults, competing agendas, Sinestro, the Guardians and Hal’s reluctance to surrender his ring.

He thought Zoe was dead.
One by one, those assumptions have become less certain.
“Lights Out” arrives with John facing the possibility that the people and institutions he trusted have been shaping his choices all along.
And Hal may be reaching the same conclusion.
What to Watch
The biggest question entering Episode 5 is whether Zoe really is the Manhunter or simply another layer of misdirection.
But several other threads are converging.
The Guardians have ordered Hal removed. Sinestro has begun manipulating the conflict between the two Lanterns. Macon’s relationship with the Manhunter remains unresolved. Hector revealed that the conspiracy extends beyond Rushville. Sheriff Kane is now fully inside the investigation.
And somewhere beneath all of it remains the question that has defined John Stewart’s journey since childhood:
Is he ready to become Green Lantern?
Episode 5 may begin answering that by showing what John does when the man holding the ring no longer trusts him.
