Black westerns have always been few and far in between but director Jeymes Samuel has teamed up with none other than Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, as well as Overbrook’s James Lassiter for a gritty look at an adventure in the Old West in the star-studded upcoming Netflix drama, The Harder They Fall.
The film follows the exploits of Nat Love who reassembles his former gang to seek revenge against the man who murdered his parents. The film stars Jonathan Majors Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, LaKeith Stanfield, Delroy Lindo, and Regina King.
Written, directed, and produced by Samuels, this is his first foray into the Western drama as a feature film but his Black Western short, They Die by Dawn, was a festival favorite. Released in 2013, Samuel’s short starred another all-star cast, which included Michael K. Williams, Erykah Badu, Isaiah Washington, Jesse Williams, and Rosario Dawson.
In addition to producing the film, Carter will also contribute original music for the film as well.
The Harder They Fall will premiere on Netflix this fall.
