Dark Matter Episode 205 Preview: Love and Be Loved Tests What Jason Can’t Control
Jason Dessen spent Season 1 crossing infinite realities to get his family back. Four episodes into Season 2, he’s discovering that getting them back doesn’t mean he gets to keep their lives from changing.
“Stars, Hide Your Fires” leaves the Dessen family more divided than at any point since they escaped into a new reality. Charlie has gone to college, determined to begin a life that isn’t dictated by the Box or his parents’ fear. Daniela has left Jason, not necessarily to end their marriage, but because she needs enough distance to understand who she has become after everything they’ve survived. Jason remains behind, staring at equations and searching for a scientific solution to a problem that has become increasingly personal.
That makes “Love and Be Loved” a particularly revealing title for Episode 5. Jason still loves Daniela and Charlie, and neither has stopped loving him. But Dark Matter has reached a point where love and proximity are no longer the same thing. Jason may want his family together, but the people he fought so hard to recover are beginning to decide what they want for themselves.
The Dark Matter Episode 205 Preview arrives at the midpoint of the season with nearly every major character confronting some version of that dilemma. Daniela needs to discover who she is outside the crisis surrounding Jason. Charlie is beginning adulthood. Amanda and Ryan have returned to a Chicago that no longer resembles the home they expected. Jason 2 is finally confronting what happened when he tried to replace his own life rather than change it.
Infinite possibilities haven’t eliminated consequences. They’ve multiplied them.

Jason’s challenge heading into “Love and Be Loved” isn’t simply finding Daniela or convincing Charlie to remain close. It’s accepting that protecting the people he loves may require allowing them to make choices he cannot control. That’s particularly difficult for someone whose entire journey has been built around refusing to accept loss. Jason rejected the reality Jason 2 imposed upon him, survived the Box and fought his way back to his family. When alternate Jasons threatened them, he helped move Daniela and Charlie into another world. When the Box remained dangerous, he tried to destroy it. When dismantling it didn’t work, he returned to science.
Every step has reinforced Jason’s belief that there is another action he can take, another problem he can solve. Daniela’s departure gives him something considerably harder to confront because there may be nothing to fix. She told Jason he remains her person, but she also made clear that she needs to understand herself outside the crisis that has consumed their lives. Jason can’t solve that with quantum entanglement. That tension gives the Dark Matter Episode 205 Preview its emotional foundation, with Jason facing a problem that can’t be solved simply by finding the right equation or opening another door.
Charlie presents a different version of the same problem. Going to college isn’t another emergency. It’s exactly what Charlie is supposed to do. After spending so much of Dark Matter having his life shaped by decisions made by multiple versions of Jason, Charlie has finally begun making choices of his own. For Jason, loving his son may now mean accepting that Charlie’s independence isn’t another form of losing him. The Dark Matter Episode 205 Preview makes that distinction especially important as Charlie begins building a future that belongs to him rather than another version of his family’s escape.
That distinction gives the episode title considerably more weight. “Love and Be Loved” describes two sides of a relationship that aren’t always interchangeable. Jason has already demonstrated how far he’s willing to go for the people he loves. The more complicated question is whether he can love them without believing that protecting them gives him the right to determine what their lives should look like.
Jason 2 has already learned what happens when that distinction disappears. His conversation with Amanda forced him to acknowledge that the Box didn’t make him steal another man’s life. He was unhappy, saw another existence he wanted and took it. Amanda knew his flaws and loved him anyway, but Jason 2 chose another reality instead of doing the harder work of changing himself.
His attempts to make amends don’t erase what he did, but they suggest Season 2 is interested in what accountability looks like when the consequences can’t be reversed. Jason 2 can’t return the years he stole from Jason, Daniela or Charlie. He can’t undo what happened to Amanda or Ryan. The Dark Matter Episode 205 Preview suggests his next challenge isn’t repairing the past but deciding what kind of person he intends to become after finally accepting responsibility for it. What he can do is decide whether the person who created all of that damage is the person he intends to remain.
Amanda and Ryan have their own problem after finally returning to Amanda’s Chicago. The magnet they left behind confirms they’ve reached the correct reality, but the world surrounding the Box has changed. The Box has been moved, the city is under curfew and officials wearing biohazard equipment quickly surround them. They found home, only to discover that home continued moving while they were gone.
It’s a development that quietly connects their story to Jason’s. He spent Season 1 treating home as a destination, something that could be recovered if he found the correct door. Amanda and Ryan have now discovered the same flaw in that assumption. Returning to the right coordinates doesn’t guarantee the life you remember will still be waiting there.
Daniela may be the character with the greatest opportunity to redefine that idea in Episode 5. Much of Dark Matter has positioned her as the destination in someone else’s journey. Jason 2 crossed realities because he wanted the life Jason built with her. Jason 1 crossed realities because he wanted to return to her. Other versions of Jason eventually followed because they wanted some version of the same family.
Now Daniela has chosen to leave. The Dark Matter Episode 205 Preview gives that decision particular weight because Daniela isn’t choosing another Jason and isn’t necessarily walking away from her marriage. She needs enough distance to discover what she wants after spending so much time reacting to what different versions of Jason wanted from her. “Love and Be Loved” could give Daniela something the multiverse rarely has: a life that isn’t defined by which Jason is standing beside her.
The same is increasingly true for Charlie. College moves him physically and emotionally beyond the family unit that has defined him. It doesn’t remove the danger created by the Box, but it gives Charlie something he hasn’t had very often since this story began: ownership of what happens next.
Jason, meanwhile, remains with his equations. The final image of Episode 4 is important because Daniela leaves and Jason doesn’t abandon his work. He looks back toward it, still convinced the Box represents an unfinished problem. That instinct makes sense. As long as the Box remains accessible, another Jason, another Leighton or another unknown traveler could threaten everything again.
But Jason’s determination to eliminate that danger risks becoming another kind of trap. The Box once represented the possibility of another life. Now Jason may be using it to avoid accepting that the life he already has is changing whether he solves the machine or not.
Five episodes into a 10-episode season, Dark Matter has positioned its major characters across different emotional and physical spaces. Jason is alone, Daniela is searching for herself, Charlie is beginning college, Amanda and Ryan have reached a changed Chicago, Jason 2 is attempting to reckon with his choices and Leighton has returned carrying his own history with the Box.
The Dark Matter Episode 205 Preview doesn’t need another spectacular trip through the corridor to make “Love and Be Loved” feel consequential. The more interesting possibility is what happens when these characters can no longer use another reality as the answer to what is missing in this one.
Jason spent Season 1 proving there was almost no distance he wouldn’t travel to return to the people he loves. Episode 5 arrives with a harder question hanging over him: Can Jason love them just as fiercely when their journeys begin taking them somewhere he cannot follow?
