Black New York
“Black New York: A cinematic journey through the heart and soul of the city — one film, one story, one mood at a time.”
Black New York is a curated, 28-day journey through landmark Black films set in New York City.
Inspired by the legacy and values of the Black Reel Awards, the series honors films that reflect Black excellence in performance, authorship, innovation, and consequence. While the Black Reel Awards officially formed in 2000, the films spotlighted here embody the spirit of the Bolts long before the institution had a name.
New York is not a backdrop in these stories.
It is an engine. A pressure point. A witness.
Across the month of February, audiences are invited to move through the five boroughs, block to block, era to era, mood to mood, experiencing how Black life has been imagined, contested, and preserved on screen.
How to Experience the Series
This is not a ranking.
It is not a syllabus.
And it is not chronological by design.
Each day presents a single film, curated around experience rather than order. One day may explore institutions and authority. The next may center romance, interior life, or artistic expression. Another may confront power, economics, or moral consequence.
That movement is intentional.
Together, these films form a living cinematic archive — one that reflects the complexity, adaptability, and humanity of Black New York.
The Gotham Modes
Each film is curated through a Gotham Mode, a thematic lens that reflects how the city functions within the story.
Gotham Modes include:
- Authority & Institutions
- Existence & Isolation
- Culture & Creation
- Power & Enterprise
- Community & Memory
- Reckoning & Legacy
These modes allow the series to move fluidly across tone and era while remaining thematically connected.
Further Exploration
For readers interested in how crime, enterprise, and power shaped cinematic New York, explore Black New York Gangsters on Film, a companion feature examining the rise of the Black gangster archetype across decades of city storytelling.
Explore by Borough
New York is many cities at once.
Each borough carries its own rhythm, pressures, and cinematic language.
Explore the series by location:
- Manhattan / Harlem – Visibility, power, ambition, consequence
- Brooklyn – Memory, community, authorship, moral reckoning
- The Bronx – Culture as creation, movement, origin
- Queens – Precision, strategy, survival
- Staten Island – Isolation, mythology, collective identity
Each borough page gathers the films that reflect its cinematic voice.
The Black Reel Lens
Every film in Black New York was selected because it reflects the values the Black Reel Awards were created to honor:
- Cultural impact
- Artistic authorship
- Performance excellence
- Innovation
- Consequence
This series looks beyond recognition and nostalgia to focus on presence, how Black life occupies space, claims voice, and reshapes the city through cinema.
Black New York: The Playlist
28 Films. 28 Songs. One City.
The Black New York playlist is not a soundtrack.
It is a response.
Built as a companion to the film series, the playlist pairs each film with a song that reflects its borough, mood, and Gotham Mode. Where the films move through images, the music captures how the city feels when those stories are lived.
The playlist follows the same arc as the series from institutions and awakening, through culture and power, to reckoning and legacy.

Throughout February, we invited you to travel with us through the five boroughs, block by block, mood by mood.
Thank you for completing the journey.
