The birth of hip-hop and the conditions that created the seminal art are the subject of the upcoming Netflix series, The Get Down. The new series, the brainchild of Baz Luhrman, dropped their first trailer earlier today.

This Netflix series, set in the 1970s, will focus on a rag-tag crew of South Bronx teenagers in a broken down and beaten up, violent New York City at the brink of bankruptcy, which gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco – a story told through the lives and music of the South Bronx kids who changed the city, and the world . . . forever.

The cast includes Justice Smith, Dope’s Shameik Moore, Skylan Brooks (The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete), Tremaine Brown, Jr., Herizen Guardiola, Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Mamoudou Athie, Jimmy Smits and Jaden Smith.

Luhrmann directed several episodes, including the pilot, episode 2 and the season finale and will also executive produce the series with Catherine Martin, Paul Watters, Thomas Kelly, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Shawn Ryan and Marney Hochman.

This is the second series to take a look at the music of the 1970s. HBO is launching Vinyl, which debuts in February.

The Get Down is set to premiere this year, although an exact date has yet to be provided.
