After watching Ryan Gosling in several films, we can validate that he is one of Hollywood’s most unique talents. Gosling is currently thrilling audiences with his most recent film, The Place Beyond the Pines but his next film, Only God Forgives, will continue to expand his legend.

The film reunites Gosling with writer director Nicolas Winding Refn who worked together on Drive. In this latest film set in Bangkok, ten years earlier Julian (Gosling) killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty. When Julian’s brother murders a prostitute, the police call on retired cop Chang – the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order’ by chopping off the man’s right hand. Julian’s mother Jenna (Kristen Scott-Thomas) – the head of a powerful criminal organization – arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and ‘raise hell’.

If the film is intense as the trailer (which probably it is), then Refn and Gosling have another certified hit on their hands. We’ve seen two trailers for the film and Scott-Thomas may garner awards consideration as the take-no-prisoners-badass-mom in the story.

The film will be in competition for the famed Palm d’Or at this year Cannes Film Festival and it should be a MAJOR player this awards season with it’s stylized visual style, intense script and lead performances.

Only God Forgives opens in theaters on July 19, 2013.
