Terrence Howard CANNOT be happy. After losing his role as James “Rhodey” Rhodes afer the first film, Don Cheadle gets the star treatment in upcoming Iron Man 3.

The seventh film in Marvel film universe finds Cheadle slipping out of the silver War Machine and into the U.S. Government-approved upgraded suit. Based on the Marvel Comics version of the Iron Patriot armor, Cheadle will sport patriotic colors in the latest film.

Change is the buzzword for the third installment of the film. In the film story, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) will see his life transformed as he redefines himself via the Extremis armor in the first post-Avengers Marvel Studios production, so to will James “Rhodey” Rhodes with a new, increased role to play.

“We’ve got a private sector and a public sector, or rather a military version of Iron Man,” said Cheadle. “And I think there is a desire from the powers that be to make sure that those things are distinguished and distinguishable so that we know where everybody stands.”

Cheadle continued, “I think that’s kind of the tension that is created for Tony and for Rhodey, because like who’s really got the stick, and who really gets to decide what happens in certain situations? And that’s what will be a lot of fun to explore in this film too.”

Despite the character’s acquisition of an armored suit of his own by the end of Iron Man 2, Rhodey was missing during the battle of New York in the final act of The Avengers. His admission will be explained in Iron Man 3 and how he will probably be in the mix for The Avengers 2.

The Marvel Universe of stories will continue to expand; Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014, The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.
