With his current film, 12 Years A Slave building Oscar steam, director Steve McQueen has cut a deal with HBO to for his next project.
HBO has confirmed that they are developing a drama from McQueen that centers on a young African-American man who is entering New York high society, with a past that may not be what it seems.
McQueen will co-write the untitled project with Matthew Michael Carnahan. McQueen will also serve as director with Carnahan, Iain Canning, Emil Sherman and Russell Simmons also exec producing.
In addition to directing 12 Years A Slave, McQueen’s recent film credits include Hunger and Shame. His HBO project is his first foray in television.
Steve McQueen has created a masterpiece of a film. Although at times it is very disturbing to watch, it gives the viewer a day in the life of a free man, who is kidnapped and sold as a slave, multiplied by 12 years. Make no mistake this is not Django Unchained. 12 Years A slave is a hard core no holds barred in your face, dig up DW Griffith and let him watch a honest film depicting a shameful part of our history. This is a must see film for everyone old enough and mature enough to handle the film content. Watching the film, one could hear a pin drop because it was that intense and the audience probably could not believe what they were watching. I’m still exhausted days later. Oscar nominations for best picture, best director and best actor should follow.
