Fruitvale Station in Competiton at Cannes

Fruitvale-640x360

The line-up for the 66th Annual Festival de Cannes also known as the Cannes Film Festival has been announced a surprise inclusion is Sundance Film Fest winner, Fruitvale Station.

Originally titled Fruitvale, the film tells the story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, and his experiences on the last day of his life, before he was fatally shot in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day 2009.

Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, Fruitvale Station will compete in the Un Certain Regard (a certain glance or a particular outlook) section of Cannes. The winner of this category will receive the Prix un certain regard award. Coogler’s film will compete against other American films including Sophia Coppola’s The Bling Ring and James Franco’s drama, As I Lay Dying.

The Cannes Film Fest selection continues the momentum of the film which earlier this year won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Fruitvale Station stars Michael B. Jordan as Oscar Grant. It is the feature-film debut of Coogler and is co-produced by Forest Whitaker.
